it was my purpose.” – Shaynelle Bordley-Barnes, LPCMH, CADC, CPS, NCC, CCHP

What was your path to becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor?

After being exposed to a significant number of tragedies and hardships in life, I knew counseling was not what I “wanted to do” but, instead, it was my purpose. I have worked in the mental health field for over 15 years. I have had the opportunity to help shape the lives of many women, men, and youth from a wide variety of backgrounds in Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. I specialize in co-occurring disorders, mindfulness-based treatment, addictions, recovery, prevention and re-entry services, grief and bereavement, adolescents, behavioral and crises management, trauma, and LGBTQ+ issues. I am an internationally-certified addiction counselor, prevention specialist, correctional health professional, and National Certified Counselor. I hold a Master of Arts degree in counseling psychology from Immaculata University in Pennsylvania and graduated magna cum laude.

What should someone know about working with you?

I am a huge advocate for self-care! I enjoy mindfulness-based activities, such as meditation, yoga, working out, and massages. What makes me most successful is a unique and special gift that drives me every day: My passion for helping and healing others. I am the CEO of Purpose-Driven Therapeutic Services, a professional and licensed counseling private practice firm that specializes in helping clients overcome their challenges by finding their life’s purpose while achieving their personal goals and improving their competence, capacity, and productivity. Our most commonly utilized interventions include person-centered therapy, solution-focused therapy, motivational interviewing, and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy. PDT specializes in providing teletherapy services and has a trained intake specialist ready to assist you with completing a trauma-informed, seamless intake.

What are you most excited about within the evolving mental health landscape?

I enjoy seeing the transformation in the scope of mental health treatment and advocacy. As an internationally-certified prevention specialist, awareness of the need for mental health services is important. Telehealth offers therapy to clients with a more in-depth reach. Transportation and scheduling used to be significant barriers to engaging in therapy. However, with convenience now provided through telehealth options, clients have become more willing and open to engaging in therapy. The availability of social media platforms also offers the chance for discussions, webinars, and resource groups. This has created a huge shift in the previously “taboo” phenomenon of discussing mental health. It has decreased stigmas and myths, allowing people to embrace mental health in the same way we embrace medical health concerns.
